Service Included in All Our Packages
NIF registration is included in all Noble Assets services: property search, transaction support, new construction purchases, and investments. You don't need to handle this yourself — we take care of it.
1. What is NIF
NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal) is a Portuguese tax identification number, similar to a Social Security Number in the US or National Insurance Number in the UK. It's a unique 9-digit number assigned to every taxpayer in Portugal — both residents and non-residents.
NIF is the first document you'll need in Portugal. It's required for virtually any official action in the country, from opening a bank account to purchasing property.
NIF Structure
NIF consists of 9 digits, where the first digit indicates the type of taxpayer:
- 1, 2, 3 — individuals (residents)
- 45 — individuals (non-residents)
- 5 — legal entities
- 6 — government bodies
2. Why You Need NIF
Without NIF in Portugal, you cannot perform virtually any official action. Here are the main situations where it's required:
Real Estate
Buying, renting, signing any contracts
Bank Account
Opening an account at any Portuguese bank
Mobile Service
Signing a contract with a carrier
Internet & TV
Connecting home services
Vehicle
Purchase, registration, insurance
Healthcare
Insurance and medical services
Employment
Getting a job or registering a business
Taxes
Filing returns and paying taxes
Important: NIF is required even if you don't plan to become a Portuguese resident. For property purchases or investments, NIF is mandatory.
3. Who Needs NIF
NIF is needed by anyone who plans any official activity in Portugal:
Property Buyers
NIF is required for signing the purchase contract and registering ownership
Investors
For participating in investment projects, purchasing shares, or registering a company
Relocators
For visa applications, residence permits, and registering with social services
Remote Workers
For opening a bank account, renting housing, and signing contracts
Business Owners
For registering a company and conducting business activities
4. How to Get NIF
There are several ways to obtain NIF in Portugal. The choice depends on your citizenship, location, and time constraints.
Option 1: In Person at Finanças
The most straightforward way is to visit a Portuguese tax office (Finanças) in person. EU citizens can get NIF immediately upon presenting their passport. Non-EU citizens need a fiscal representative.
Option 2: Through a Representative
If you cannot come to Portugal or are a non-EU citizen, you can obtain NIF through a representative. This can be a lawyer, accountant, or specialized service.
Note: If the power of attorney is issued to a Portuguese lawyer, apostille is not required.
Option 3: As Part of Our Services
NIF Included in All Noble Assets Services
When you work with us on property search, transaction support, new construction, or investments — NIF registration is already included. We handle all the paperwork.
- No additional fees for NIF
- Processing time: 1-3 business days
- We act as your fiscal representative
5. Required Documents
The document requirements depend on your citizenship and chosen method:
For EU Citizens
- Valid passport or ID card
- Proof of address (home country or Portugal)
For Non-EU Citizens
- Valid passport
- Proof of address (home country)
- Fiscal representative appointment (if applying remotely)
6. Tax Representative
Non-EU citizens who don't reside in Portugal are required to appoint a fiscal representative. This is a person or company registered in Portugal who will receive official correspondence from the tax authorities on your behalf.
Important: Since 2022, EU citizens no longer need a fiscal representative. However, non-EU citizens still require one.
The representative doesn't have access to your finances — they only receive and forward official correspondence.
When working with Noble Assets, we act as your fiscal representative at no additional cost. This is included in all our service packages.

8. Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get NIF online?
Not directly. The Portuguese tax authority doesn't accept online applications from non-residents. However, you can issue a power of attorney and get NIF through a representative remotely.
How long is NIF valid?
NIF is assigned for life and doesn't require renewal. However, if you change your status (e.g., become a resident), you need to update your information with the tax office.
Can I have multiple NIFs?
No. Each person is assigned only one NIF. If you lose your number, you can recover it at Finanças or through Portal das Finanças.
Does NIF make me a Portuguese tax resident?
No. NIF is just an identification number. Tax residency is determined by other criteria: 183 days of presence in the country, center of vital interests, etc.
Can I get NIF for a child?
Yes, NIF can be obtained for children of any age. This may be needed when purchasing property in a child's name or for health insurance.
What if I lose my NIF?
NIF can be recovered at any Finanças office by presenting your passport. The number is also available in your Portal das Finanças account if you have access.
Do I need NIF for a tourist trip?
No. For regular tourism, NIF is not required. It's only needed for official actions: property purchase, opening an account, long-term rental, etc.
